Default USB Drive letter not seen

Work has got me a new IBM thinkpad R50e, running WinXP home SP2. (Not my pick)
It will reconsie my flash drives. (Device manage sees it, the "Safely remove hardware" icon comes up in the system tray).
But Windows refuses to give me a drive letter so I can copy to and from it??
    What am I missing?

Maybe you have to format it??

Control panel / admin tools / computer management / disk management. Does it show here? If so, it may need to be formatted before XP can see it. And give it a letter.

Or just to the above and highlight it (if it shows there), and
select change drive letter and paths. Give it a letter that isnt already taken.

    Thanks speedy.
Changing the drive letter in "disk management" now allows me to see it fine... this was weird as its seen ok in all the other computers in the office.

No worries PC. Umm yup, I think everyone will see it if it's "shared" on a network. Even tho you cant on your own PC! Which sounds pretty stupid.

Same thing happens for me at Work.

Some PC's will put it in as G: while some put it as X: and one likes calling it Z:

Strange, and Im yet to understand why.....

I have noticed that on some networked systems, a pen drive is given the same drive letter as an existing network drive. If this happens, the pen drive mounts but "sits behind" the network drive and you cannot effectively see it. Reallocate the drive letter and you are away.
