Friend can access my pc, but I can't access friend's pc on crossover network

Hi everyone,
I have created a home network by way of two computers onboard network cards and a 20m crossover cable.

My friend's computer can access files and other items I've shared over the network, but I can't access his computer at all. All I get is the following message

"<name of pc i'm trying to access> is not acccessable. You might not have permission to use this network resource. contact the administrator of this server to find out if you have access permissions.

Logon failure: the user has not been granted the requested logon type at this computer"

Both pc's are running windows xp with sp2 installed and all firewall software disabled. My pc is an amd xp1800 and my friends is a p4 3ghz

Any help will be greatly appreciated

Are the files shared?
Do they have a guest account setup?

Try going

\\192.168.xx.xx\c$

Using the IP of her machine in IE and see if you can login using a valid admin account that way as a quick and dirty fix.

Or try the network setup wizard whosit.

And make sure the Windows firewall is disabled on her machine.

Try pinging the other PC and have a look at the output of 'netstat -rn'.

Is your hosts file set up properly?

Have both computers got the same workgroup name??

Are either of u using any other firewall?? If not, this isnt a good idea.

Also on yours/his/her LAN, under the LAN icon on the taskbar...under properties, have u selected use the following ip address, and typed in the ip addresses for both you and him/her??

Also, try creating what ever the username you use on your machine as a username on his, preferably with administrator privledges. Seeing as you are both using Sp2, try disabling windows firewall for a while.

Thanks for the replies everyone,

Both computers are running under admin accounts,

I tried putting "\\192.168.0.2\c$" (my friends ip address on the network minus quotation marks of course) into ie.. no luck although it works if I put in my pc's networks ip

Both pc's have a manually configured ip
Both pc's have firewall's disabled
Both pc's are setup under the same workgroup name
Both pc's reply when pinging each other
Hosts file is setup properly
We have run network setup wizard and restarted numerous times
All files are shared as should be

It's strange, from his pc my friend can access my pc with full access no troubles but when I try to access his pc (see above post for error message)

Has your mate created a folder, and shared that folder J-Joyce? on his PC??

You have to create a folder in order to share it. DONT share the whole hdd tho. That'll be a BIG mistake. Especially if u have no firewall enabled.

I wouldnt use the network wizard either. Just enter the ips in manually under the LAN icons/properties/TCP/IP. The wizard can screw things up.

Are both of these PC's on the net?? Which one has ICS enabled?

File sharing is enabled and files are shared on both pc's and I've entered the ip's for both pc's 192.168.0.1 is "my computer" which is also the pc with ICS enabled, my friend's pc is 192.168.0.2 subnet mask is 255.255.255.0 and the default gateway is 192.168.0.1(which is my pc the one with ICS)

I'm not sure about winns, default gateway or dns tho

Put 192.168.0.1 for default gateway and the same for dns. Some say that XP doesn't need a DNS server entered but in my experience there can be problems if not entered. Are you both logging in with the same user name and password?
