Default What is a good gaming graphics card?

    Hi,

My friend is looking for a good (not too expensive) graphics card for use in a gaming PC. As I don't know what is good these days, would appreciate some feedback on the subject.

    Cheers,
    Bletch

I use a Nivida Geforce FX5200 (128 ram) had no trouble with it. Runs Sims2 ok (so my daughter tells me)
But If you search the forum on this subject and put for poster "metla" he posted some very informative topics on this very subject. He has some very reliable experance in this area (I think)

This http://www.qmb.co.nz/p.aspx?102142 looks good, and its only $215

I don't know if it is any good though, as it is an SE version.

Could someone tell me how good that card is?

As I said on MSN, I would recommend the 9800 Pro for your friend's budget (under $600).

It has been around for a while, but is still a great card.

Did you create this thread before or after our conversation? IE, I might just be pointlessly repeating myself.

these SE models are not really good, they have a lower memory frequencey (correct me if im wrong) but this is how it is on my 9600SE, they are ALOT slower than its brother/sister card the 9800 or 9800 pro. this will show you what i mean, but there dont seem to be any mention of the 9800SE, but if you compare the link that i gave you to your one you will see the difference.
    hope that helps

Would be helpful to know the specs of his system to better give informed advice.

I think the 9600Pro or the FX5700 (note: not the LE version). These are around $200 from most computer stores (for 128mb RAM). And will play most games at a reasonable rate (IIRC Doom3 is playable at 800x600, provided rest of computer is upto standard).

Apparently these are low-midrange cards, but if you've got a 15" or 17" monitor then it should run everything fine. The difference between the two cards is minimal (several FPS). And choosing between them is simply a matter of what brand you prefer: ATI or NVIDIA.

Thats some comparison charts for most graphics cards on the markets. Unless you're going to be playing Doom3 at high res then theres not much point in spending more than $200 or so.

GeForce 6600GT AGP (or PCIe version if your friend has a PCIe mobo.)
It'll blow the 9800pro out of the water at around the same price (around $350.) If your friend has the money to spend, maybe go for the 6800LE, or the 6800. For best of the best get a Geforce 6800GT/Ultra or a Radeon X800XT.

I have the GeForce 4 MX420, and it's choking - best to go for the higher (but more expensive end) to last you a long while yet.
