Default hiding icons in taskbar and system tray

Is it possible to hide icons in taskbar and system tray for programs running in the background that I don't need to check every few minutes ie I transfer large files using WSFTP but it takes up room on the task bar. I am using XP Pro TIA

For the ones in the Tasktray you can right click the Start button, go to the Taskbar tab > put a tick in Hide inactive icons then go to the Customize button and in that list click on the items in the right column (Behaviour) and choose what setting you want (probably "always hide").
