Default Their Computer not reading disk from my Computer

    Hi
Copied Adaware, Spybot, AVG, CamUnzip, Irfan View onto a Verbatim pocket CD-R 185MB 1x-16x speed recordable mini disk that I downloaded from the Web to put on a friend's computer.[They are on limited hours internet].
They have Windows XP Pro like I do.
    They have a CD-ROM, I have a CD-RW/DVD-Rom Drive 24 X Read, 24 X Write, 8 X DVD.

But their computer only saw one of the programs on the disk, and under Murphy's law it would have to be the older of the 2 versions on the disk which I didn't want to install. Why is this? Should I be copying and pasting, or drag and dropping the files onto the disk instead of letting windows do the writing to CD bit?

Ended up having to download all except AVG from the net again on their computer. AVG refuses to cooperate. Installs great on my computer, but the download from the net into their computer won't install. Windows won't automatically open and install it. Camunzip will extract the files into a folder, and then when I try to set up the installation its a "no go".

Their mouse was freezing on them, and sometimes computer refused to come out of standby, and had to be switched off at the wall. You wouldn't believe the number of critical objects that AdAware and Spybot found on their computer! Defrag took ages to do but the bar which contains the fragmented files etc. looked beautiful and clean at the end of the session.

They are really happy with mouse now behaving, machine faster, but am really keen to get AVG on their machine fast to clear out any other nasties that may be there.
Any help will be really appreciated.

    regards Marg

    Hi drb1

They bought the computer system off the Chinese student who stays with them. Their son replaced the monitor, partitioned the 20gb harddrive, and not sure what else he did. He hasn't given them any disks.
The CD Rom looks clean. The disk I used was brand new. It did read the 1st program that was on the disk but not the others.

Where do you find the program or set up that extracts files on Windows XP pro. Mine works. Theirs doesn't seem to and doesn't give you the option when you R/Click the file? Downloaded AVG onto their computer before but it wouldn't install. That's why I chose to do it from a disk that I had used.

    Marg.
Am going into the AVG link you gave me now to check it out. Thanks.

    Can you not:

Double left click My computer on Desktop and then find CD Rom and look for relevant file/s then copy and paste to My docs or where ever? Then install.

probably the best option is to slave their hdd to your pc and run the virus/spywaree scans that way..........it's quite often the case that the crap thats loaded onto a pc.....(viruses etc) will disable many of the pc's functionalities to the extent that the only way to fix it is to slave it to another pc to run those scans

How old is their CD drive Marg, it may not be compatable with yours or XP's burner? Have you got any other burning software other than XP's, something like Nero Burning Rom?

Try downloading from a PC World CD. Try installing or moving some files from any old manufactured CD and any old burned CD to test their CD's functionaility (it could, simply, be brocken).

It sounds like the disk was created in a multi-session, and the disk was not finalised (closed), in which case the last session would not be available on another PC?

As a rule I never multi-session CD-R's, all are burnt and closed as a standard option.

    Hi drcspy

= Great idea but my PC knowledge goes nowhere near slaving hdds. Thanks though.

    Hi Murray
    >>How old is their CD drive Marg, it may not be compatable with yours
    >>or XP's burner?
= Was thinking same thing about compatability, but it is strange it recognised the first program [earlier version of AdAware]. That is what gave me a glimmer of hope. Will try some of my own normal sized CD's which I've copied my own downloaded programs on to.

    >>Try downloading from a PC World CD.
= Didn't know I could do that for AVG program. Is that what you meant?
Or was it just to try any program on a CD?

    Hi zqwerty
    >>Double left click My computer on Desktop and then find CD Rom and look
    >>for relevant file/s then copy and paste to My docs or where ever?
    >>Then install.
= When I used CamUnzip to extract files I was able to see what files were involved in the CamUnzip window before extracting to a folder. But seems to be a problem at the stage where I click on the AVG program icon to start installing. [Noticed on mine that a window came up, I clicked yes and 'Disk 1st" file looked as if it is the actual installer.]

I remember they had AVG on their last computer, yet their son hasn't put it on this one. Maybe he couldn't do it either.

Thanks for giving me plenty of things to try out though. Will let you know how I get on after Saturday.
    Regards Marg.

    Hi Godfather

There are 10 downloaded programs, some zipped, some are .exe's which I put into individual file folders on the disk.
After each one was written to CD, the disk drawer would come out and I would start again on the next on. Doesn't that mean the disk was finalised each time? It is programmed to open the drawer after each copy is made. I am able to see what is on the disk.
Tried to put screen pic on Pf1 pics but can't make the saved pic as a small letter .jpg. Keeps coming up in capitals .JPEG when I do it in paint.

    regards Marg.
