    Default Autoexec.nt error

I've been getting this error message recently when I try to open some apps: "c:\windows\system32\autoexec.nt. The system file is not suitable for running MS-DOS and Microsoft Windows applications. Choose Close to terminate the operation." Went to MS site - can open apps if I expand autoexec.nt and two other files from XP Pro disk, but when I re-boot problem reappears. I've written a bat file as a temp fix, but I've no idea what's going on. Virus and trojan searches find nothing. Any clues? Running XP Pro with SP2.
