Default My computer won't play WMVs!

I've been having problems with my computer. (Windows XP Professional)
It will not play WMV's. It goes "Downloading codec" twice, then says "Error downloading codec" and pops up a message saying that the codec could not be found. It works fine on my crappy 98SE PC that I got ages ago. However, that computer lags too much to play videos.
Please help before I throw my computer against a wall, I MUST see the E3 videos of games!

go to microsofts downloads site and download the wmp9 codecs.

what video player do you use? and have you installed any codec packs?

The good thing is you can download just the WMP 9 codecs, but you don't have to infest your PC with WMP 9 itself.

Do a windows update and search round in the options.

I used Nimo50Build8 codec pack. Worked like a charm for me just as long as you read the accompanying info.

Using whatever WMP came with my computer, and the only codec I have downloaded is DivX. Doesn't play in winamp either. I'll go download the WMP9 codecs now... why they aren't included I do not know.
