Default Unable to access slave hard drive.

Hi, I'm having trouble with the hard drive that I use for backups. (IBM Deskstar 20 gb) . Normally not connected but when I need it I connect it as a slave on the end plug of my main HD cable (primary IDE)
It is configured as Auto in BIOS and appears in Device Manager/Disk drives.
It does not show up in My Computer, nor in Windows Explorer.
Has anyone any suggestions as it contains data I need.
    Thanks, Nick W.

    Megaman,
XP Pro. I have had a crash since I entered any data into the slave drive.
I have since reinstalled XP but now lack Service Pack 1.
I have just checked another hard drive, connected the same, and that shows up and can be accessed.
Could the problem be a faulty hard drive?
    Thanks,
    Nick W.

    Slave / master settings....
    Try it as secondary master...
some drive dont like being in the slave configuration...

after that... unplug all drives and plug the prob drive in to primary master with nothing else on the ide channels.... and see if the bios picks it up...

Try going into the BIOS and looking for a way to make the BIOS have a "good look" for it. Maybe turn that drive to "off" then back to Auto.

I don't think this is the answer, but an IDE cable should always be terminated to reduce the possibility of reflections from an unterminated end. That means your main hard drive should be connected to the end plug, always, and a temporary slave should be connected to the plug inboard of that.

Thanks all, I have tried most of the suggested options!
The only one I haven't tried is unplugging all drives and making the faulty drive(?) the master.
Will try that tomorrow as I have just about had a gutsfull of computers today!!
