My 100mhz 486 has 8mb ram, and seems to cope ok with Windows 95. But whenever I try to view the files in any directory (say through My Computer or Windows Explorer), the files in the directory appear on screen one by one, or in bunches of 5 or 6, very slowly. The more files in the directory, the longer it seems to take. The same thing happens with the Open File dialog boxes in most applications, and the icons in the Control Panel. While the files/icons are slowly materializing, the mouse cursor moves jerkily. This only ceases when all files in the directory are on screen (after about a minute, depending on the contents of the directory). I have tried defragmenting the hard drive, but to no avail. What could be wrong? Everything else works fine, and this problem only started recently.
