    Default New to USB

    Hi all
I'm new to USB..... I've just got a new laptop and pluged a USB GPS in. It recognised it and asked for the install disk and loaded the software ok.
Now when I plug it into another USB port it asks for the setup disk again. Do I need to install in on each port?

    Thanks Dave

No... it shouldn't do... you are of course saying you plugged it into another USB port on the same laptop?

    Lo.

Some USB equipment does need a separate install for each USB port.

I had the same problem with my scanner when I initially installed it because as a typical kiwi I knew better than to read the instructions first. It seems that the trick with most USB gear is to load the software first, reboot, and then plug in the new device. This actually seems to work and since installing this way, I have never had any problems.

I think that there is often one USB controller for each USB socket on the motherboard. It's probably better than having a controller + a hub on the MB ...

My laptop has one socket and two controllers. ?:|
