    Default Excel 5 - setting All Files as default in Open dialogue box

    I use various non-standard extensions for Excel 5 spreadsheets and would like to know how to set the File, Open dialogue box to default to All File Types. I know how to do it for Word 6 and 7 but they use WordBasic. I also know how to do it for Excel 97 but that has provision for directly accessing Visual Basic to create a macro, but Excel 5, although it also uses VB, does not access it in the same way. I suspect it ought to be possible by either creating a new macro by direct editing (ie as opposed to recording keystrokes) or a new dialogue box.

    I have searched M$ and the net without success.

    I would be grateful if someone could provide me with a method or point me to a website that has instructions.

    TIA

    Hi Robin, no answer Im afraid as Ive never used macros under Excel 5 but I believe it used macro sheets as the VBE hadnt been introduced yet. Have you tried creating a macro in Excel 5 just to see what the code looks like? With any luck the methods and parameters may not have changed too much. I presume you were using something like this in Excel 97?

    Sub FileOpen()
    Dim fileSaveName As String
    fileSaveName = Application.GetOpenFilename( _
    fileFilter:="All Files (*.*), *.*")
    Workbooks.Open Filename:=fileSaveName
    End Sub

    It may pay to post this question in a dedicated Excel message forum like Mr Excel.

    Thanks Parry. My instructions for doing it in Excel 97 are rather different from those you give. One of the problems is that I haven't found a way to directly write code in Excel 5 - I was wondering about creating a macro using recorded keystrokes and then saving and editing it.
    I will check out the Mr Excel site.
