Default Win 2000 Pro dual boot drama

I have a machine that has Win 2000 and during the boot process it brings up two options - Win 2000 (current OS) and Win 98 (previous OS which has been removed from the hard drive).

Under Windows XP I am aware that this problem can be solved by running MSCONFIG and editing the boot.ini file.

However Windows 2000 does not have MSCONFIG - and I can not locate the boot.ini file.

How do I get rid of the Win 98 option?

You can simply remove the display multple OS's by right clicking My Computer - Properties - Advanced - Startup and Recovery.

Win2k won't allow you to edit the Boot.ini file while it is running. The only way is to boot using a win98 floppy and then at the command prompt type edit c:\boot.ini

This won't work if you have formatted using NTFS.

Not sure if the service packs have made it possible to edit this file or not now but I know you couldn't before.

Quickest and easiest way would be to disable the boot menu so that the PC automatically loads win2k.

Right-click My Computer then select Properties.
Select Advanced tab then Startup & Recovery button.
Make sure the default OS is Windows 2000 and untick the Display list of OS's for ???? seconds.

Restart the PC to test it!

You can edit the boot.ini file now in win2k.
You need to go into any explorer window (thats Windows Explorer NOT internet explorer ) then goto Tools - Folder Options - View and untick Hide Protected Operating System Files and click Yes to the warning that pops up.
You should now be able to see the boot.ini file in C:\
You might also have to remove the Read Only tick from the properties of the file.

FYI , I have been told that if you have access to XP, copy msconfig file to win2000 machine and works happily.
