Default Windows xp patch and starting in safe mode

How do I start my computer running xp home in safe mode?
Do I need to get the xp service patch 1 on my new computer? Where would I get it?

Start your computer, and before xp starts to load, press the f8 key.
from the options, use the arrow keys, select safe mode, and press enter.

Service patch1 has the latest security updates, from microsoft. some folks have had trouble when installing this. however, you can find it at your windows update web site. click start 'all programs' and click windows update, at the top of the listing.

This is a large download so it will take some time, if you are using dail up. it is all available, on februarys pc world cd.

If your computer is a hp pavilion, be sure to download the patch from
the hp web site before installing sp1
