Default OT: Top Ten Ways To Be Spammed!

Thanks to the good folks at PC Authority for this nice bit of information.

    * Put an e-mail address on a high-traffic Web site

    * Post (or reply to a post) on UseNet

    * Post (or reply to a post) on a public Web-based discussion group

    * Register the address with a Web site that goes out of business and sells its list

    * Register the address with a Web site that sells its list anyway

    * Subscribe to a porn site with the address

    * Reply to an opt-out E-mail or click on an opt-out link in a message

    * Use an address with a common name that can be easily guessed

    * Register a domain name

    * Post an E-mail address in a chat room

I don't think I'll be registering any domain names anytime soon

I've had a domain name for several years agent and it gets no spam.

What makes one domain name relatively immune while others get spammed?

    Cheers

I assume that the bots used by email-collectors would have to know the domain existed. This may require doing some tricky (and perhaps illegal) work with a registered domains database, searching on Google, or various other methods of "address harvesting".

The e-mail used as a contact for the domain name holder is easily harvested from sites such as domainz.org.

I specifically used an e-mail that is not connected with my domain name.

I get very little spam, perhaps 1 per month at most. This is despite my contact details and domain name e-mail address being publically available on several Regulatory web pages, and over which I have no control, as it is a requirement for me to provide the details.

It also depends on how many people have had the domain name before you . i've got a friend with a domain and he is constantly getting spam where as the one I've recently purchased hasn't had any yet. Though it might start to get some when the site goes live.

The other aspect is whether or not people use that domain as a fake email as I remember reading in one of robo's brilliant threads.

I did the same thing with my one as well. Not so much for that reason but more so that if I get emailed to tell me to renew my domain I'll actually be able to receive the email.

What is this spam? I've got 4 different email addys and I don't get any spam - ever! What's wrong with me? What am I missing out on? I'm no different to anyone else. I've unsubscribed to newsletters, I've got my own domain name and web site, I've got my contact details on a website, but no spam, I never get any spam. I'm feeling dejected! Why am I being singled out? Am I that big a failure? Life......don't talk to me about life!
    Grumble, grumble, moan. ;-)

Maybe I ought to see about having this list added to the forum's Spam FAQ? It is currently locked but it should not be a big deal for Bruce or someone to make an addition. What do you think?

I see. From the way that appears (as raw HTML -- was that intentional?), all you have to do is use lots of
    tokens.

Anyway, I read the magazine. ;-)
