Default Linux Red Hat 8.0 installation

I am trying to install Red Hat 8 on an older machine with a Celeron 500MHZ CPU/512Mb RAM/20GB HDD and a rather ancient CD-Rom drive.
CD Rom boots up okay and starts the initial setup and detecting hardware phase. It reaches the 'loading anaconda' stage where it continually falls over.

Displays one of the following error messages when it crashes:
/usr/bin/python2.2: error while loading shared librarries:/lib/ubm.so.6: cannot read file data: error 21Install exited abnormally
    OR
    Install exited abnormally.
    OR
Exec: accessing a corrupted shared library.

As I am a 'linux virgin' I am not really sure what the problem is.
I have partitioned my hard drive -- 1/2 for WIN98SE and 1/2 for Red Hat 8. the disc space allocated for Red Hat is unformatted so that Red Hat can partition it and install itself on it.

    Any Suggestions much appreciated

It's having trouble reading the CD. Try cleaning it.

    What Graham suggested,

Although you might want to run the media check test on the CD to see if it's ok.

As for the ancient CDROM drive, have you had problems with it reading/copying data from a CD to hard drive?

Yeah I thought it May've been the ancient CD-Rom drive -- occasionally I have problems with it reading data but hadn't used it for ages so wasn't sure as to its working status and I was unsure what to make of the abovementioned error messages.
    Thanks for the sound advice.
Looking at fiddling with another Linux distro -- either Mandrake 9.1 or Yopper -- any opinions/recommendations?

Might I suggest that you nail RedHat 8 first before progressing onto another Distro, you'll just be asking for more of a headache otherwise!

    But.. If you must:
    Yoper!
