Default A window that won't go away!

I'm looking at a friends computer running Windows XP that opens to the desktop with a "hard to delete" window with an entry point message to do with not being able to open the WS2_32.dll file. Apparently this has only been happening in the last day or so. The computer seems to run OK but this annoying box is always on top!! A System Restore does not help
When I bring up the Windows task manager, I cannot immediately end task with this window unless I find the application in the processes tab and remove it here first.
The unusual thing is that each time I restart the computer the window is back and it is always named something different on the top line - for instance cet1.exe or bym1.exe etc etc always 3 random letters then the number 1 dot exe.
The computer is also running a bit sluggish so I installed adaware and it picked up lots of stuff and I have deleted these - a slight improvement in speed but still have this permanent box on top (unless I delete it as explained above)
I have checked virus definitions and they are right up to date and a full scan does not show anything.
its got me stumped - I've had a look online but keep getting information on reinstalling the winsock file - but I'm not sure that its damaged - merely that this odd exe file cannot get entry!!
I would prefer to disable this exe file but not sure what to do next.
Have looked in MSCONFIG and disabled quite a few prorammes from starting up. On the "startUp" tab can I untick all the programmes and then trial each one in turn to see if it is one of these - or are there some programmes that should remain ticked in the list?
Would appreciate some help on the above - especially if someone has already figured out this one!!

Try downloading & running Spybot. Picks up diallers, some trojans etc. that ad-aware doesn't.

The site below is great for looking up the programs in the start up list and finding out which are necessary and which can be removed.

Thanks for that - will try it tonight.
Another query - does Norton antivirus pick up trojans as well as viruses?
The computer does not have a firewall or any other protection appart from up-to-date virus software - would this make a difference.

Possibly, depending on which trojan you had. I would not rely on it to do so but find and download a specialised trojan detector/cleaner program. There are plenty on the internet, a search on Google will find you one.

Make a difference to what? Firewalls prevent unauthorised access to a computer from outside sources (internet) and alerts/prevents access going out from a computer by programs installed.

    Hi Gill

If you are looking for a trojan scanner/cleaner there is this one called Swat It.

It is nothing fancy to look at (but hey - its free :-)), but does include an file signature updater within the program.

Have a read of that site and see if it is what you are after.

    Thanks for your help
I tried Spybot and it picked up even more bits - but still not the offending window.
However the Start Tab on MSCONFIG seemed to hold the key, I unticked heaps of bits and on restarting - yeah no window loading up.
Not too sure which programme was causing the trouble but who cares!
    Happy now
