Default Linux won't work - wanting to get a Windows equivalent

Hey everyone.

I think I'm up against a brick wall when it comes to getting Linux to work with my ADSL modem (although I haven't tried).

I think things may be easier if I just install a Windows OS such as Windows Me or 98. My server computer is only a Pentium 2-266 I believe, so I don't have much power. I want this computer to be on 24-7, so restarts shouldn't be part of it's vocabulary

Anyways, I was wondering what your suggestions would be - should I use ICS or go for something like WinGate (remembering this computer is going to be used as an internet server so we don't want to be pinholing every port, etc). Also, I will obviously need to run a firewall, etc - suggestions which will work for the network etc?

I'm disappointed I can't run Linux with it, but hopefully I'll be able to get a similar solution using windows and a few 3rd party products.

Your suggstions would be much appreciated,
Thanks in advance,
Jonathan Giles

how is there a problem if you dident try?

I would say that linux is going to be the best / cheepest solution.

would you like the us F1 people to help get you into linux??

NOTE: i dont know very much about linux but others do.

Well Jo, it is a bit defeatist to give up on Linux and your ADSL modem without even trying. If it is a router Linux wouldn't even know it was there so to speak. You are not proposing to use an internal modenm are you?

Anyway, if you decide to go Windows, why not try 98lite. Stripped of all the unwanted garbage it is fast and stable.

Cheers

Default have a look at www.nzdsl.co.nz

to see if u can get a driver for the modem. without a linux driver, u can forget the linux idea.
if successful, u need to do some masq/squid/iptables in linux.

good luck

I have done a lot of research on the INTERAL () adsl modem i have, and I find most firewall/internet sharing linux os's don't support PPPOA very easily, nor does my internal modem get detected in the Linux OS's I have tried.

I think your idea of 98lite and WinGate will work well enough.

Any suggestions from anyone how I could remotely manage it? (I don't want to have anything other than a power, network and adsl wire running into the computer). Something like pcAnywhere but simpler, etc?

Cheers.

to remote manage it you could use VNC

I dont know where to get it but it is free and good.

just do a search for VNC
