    Default console dial-up for linux

    does anyone know if their is a console dialing program/process which i can use to dial the net in linux
    i have mandrake 8.0 and a internal hardware modem.

    plez help (btw its for a gateway not a desktop box)

    The only thing I know of is ppp
    Try running "pppsetup" .

    Try "man pppd" from the command line although Google is probably better (or the pppd howto)

    If its a gateway (ok you said it is), you could have a look at www.smoothwall.org

    I use it and its very good and I use a 486DX4-100

    I think there is a KPPP setup magician in the Control Centre of KDE, which is probably the default GUI.

    If you enter "PPP Linux" to the Search function on this page, you will find a fair amount of information. (The second one, gives a couple of links.)

    Have a look at the HOWTO documents, too.

    I take it your modem has been detected, and works. We've had siscussion on that too. ;-)

    RedHat uses wvdial to connect from the command shell - configuration is in /etc/wvdial.conf

    There is an option in "linuxconf" to configure/dial. You can also use "ifup ppp0".

    i found a howto on a vancover isp website its for conecting to them but i can easily change what is needed to my isp details (http://www.portal.ca/js_frames.html?...criptdial.html). but i cant try it coz that computers powersupply is throwing the biggest wobbly. Oh Well.
