    Default XP keeps restarting

    Hi,

Our Xp machine which we are using as an internet gatway crashes seeming at random intervals without any promting. Any suggestions where the best place would be to start narrowing down the problem. The only way I have found to make it crash consistantly is to play a specific song from a CD (it's a song about suicide so quite appropriate really).

The delays between restarts is usually quite long - but I can' t remember how long they have been occuring.

Should I just format Windows and start again?

I would reccomend that you troubleshoot what tasks/programs are running. Try swirching off non essential ones (do this via the Ctrl-Alt-Delete menu or the administrative tools control panel. I had a similar problem and it was caused by a memory resident virus. Make sure your Anti-Virus software is up to date. I f you don't have one, a good free one is AVG Free Edition at http://www.grisoft.com/

    Yes, or Click Start
    -Run
    type msconfig and hit enter

that'll let you permanently stop stuff from loading on start

Also, check and make sure everything is plugged in at the back of your PC nice and firmly, especially the power cord!

    Cheers

Remember chilling that XP has the option to reset on a BSOD. So you don't actually see a BSOD. With the conditions stated it sounds like a BSOD is causing the problems.
But indeed you are incorrect at suggesting checking the power cable.
I just don't want people writing in this thread, how they should take the PSU appart and get out a volt meter etc!

Oooh.. no, dont do that.. I said to make sure it was firmly plugged in.
If you dont know what you're doing otherwise, then you could have 240V going down your finger

easy there.......must be the crazy weather ;-)

i think what chill was getting at is sometimes random shutdowns and other problems can be caused by loose leads. there no need take the psu apart, just a simple push on the leads to check the are sitting ok. i've had it myself a few times.

If it is power, invest in a UPS just keep the battery charged.

To stop XP automatically restarting right-click My Computer, and then click Properties.
On the Advanced tab, click Settings under Startup and Recovery.
Click to clear the Automatically restart check box under System failure, and then click OK.
The error message on a blue screen should remain on the screen so you can record the error information.
