    Default Windows 95 Stuck in MS-DOS mode, can't exit

    This is one I've not seen before. We have a PC running Windows 95 that is stuck in MS-DOS mode. During startup you get a message that advises you are running in DOS Mode and asks if you would like to exit and start Windows normally. If you select "Yes", it reboots and comes back to the same message. If you select "No", you get the DOS prompt.

    Typing "Exit" at the DOS prompt (the usual way to exit MS-DOS Mode) does not work.

    Interestingly, it can be started into the Windows Safe Mode GUI, but the next reboot is back to the same startup problem. It appears there must be one of the boot files that is altered when MS-DOS mode is active but numerous searches on the MS Knowledgebase & Google have not provided any answers. I have tried disabling all startup files such as config.sys, autoexec.bat etc but to no avail.

    Short of a full reinstall, this is a last effort to see if anyone has any ideas.

    Many thanks

    Steve Cook

    You need to edit your config.sys file and remove the line that says:
    DOS=SINGLE (or something like that I think)

    Typing "exit" only works if you have entered DOS from Windows, it takes to back. You have not entered DOS from Windows so it is not a valid command.

    It obviously has a problem, but cant be too bad as safe mode works.
    Some later versions of 95 had the SFC (system file checker) routine, not sure if all did.

    Go to safe mode, go Start|Run| in the Run dialogue box, type SFC /scannow

    There is a space after SFC.

    If it is available, the utility will check your system files and replace corrupt ones. You need your Windows 95 CD for this, it may ask for it.

    Try getting the DOS pronpt, then typing "win". But I'd just reinstall. . It's probably that time ...

    Oops

    Forgot to say that you might also need to type in

    win.com /w

    if my first post does not work.

    Quite right too. If I remember correctly the 98 in Win98 indicates the number of days you should go before reinstalling. A step up from 95 days or even worse 3.1 days.

    Check your msdos.sys file (is a text file in win95). There should be an entry:
    bootgui=1
    you may find it reads:
    bootgui=0
    in which case it will only start to dos

    wuppo: that won't give a message about "being in Dos mode". That just starts in DOS. Black screen and C:\ prompt.
