    Default Wireless Networking - Confused

    Hi everyone,

Your advice is very much appreciated. I am wanting to network my laptop and PC using wireless option to share jetstream, printers, files etc. Advice given by 2 retailers are as follows:

    1. Connect USB ADSL modem to PC. Connect a wireless USB Unit (access point) to PC. Connect a wireless PC card to Notebook. Cost approx. $700.

    2. Connect router to Hub/switch. Connect WAP to Hub/switch. Connect individual wireless PCI to Notebook and desktop. Cost approx. $1800

Iam confused as the second retailer says that the first option will not work. It seems very expensive to have a wireless network for the second option. Any suggestion for a wireless network. Many thanks in advance.

    The first option should work.

Wireless networks are more for if you need it rather than just convenience - the speed isn't that great, and for greater speed you need to be closer to the access points (or other PC for example), and if that's the case you may as well just plug in your faster network cables and NICs... it's also much cheaper than WLAN.

Forget wires or not for moment.

With a regular LAN, you need an ethernet hub or switch (switch is just a smart hub). Each device needs an ethernet card. You need cables to hook it all up. A nice ADSL router like the Nokia M1122 goes into a port on the hub/switch.

Wireless, you replace the hub/switch with a wireless access point then have to ensure that all three devices can connect to it.

If you have a hub/switch like retailer number 2 says, then use ethernet for desktop and then you might as well say "sod it" and use a cable for the laptop. A wireless PC Card for the notebook and a wireless access point for one lousy device is a waste of dosh.
