Default USB - why do they do this? Drives me nuts!

I deal with a lot of different brands of laptops & desktop PCs.

Can someone out there tell me why so many manufacturers insist on putting the USB port/s itself upside down? You know what I mean - the handy little USB arrow on the topside of the plug is great for knowing which way it goes up, but why oh why do they install them so that the arrows go face down?

It seems to (my little brain anyway) be a better idea to have it always arrows up so you can see what the hell is going on when plugging a USB cable in.

And while I'm on that topic, can someone from the PC Company tell me why they have yet to have some USB ports at the front of their Home PCs...great fun mucking around at the back of the PC plugging in a camera/whatever, dislodging other cables, fighting off spiders and mice, letting the (hopefully female!) user get a good view of my rear end...a pain in the proverbial ass (well, not the said perving of course).

    why no front usb??

cost. cases with front usb cost more. plus the motherboard needs to have the extra connections.

i've said it before and i'll say it again ..the thing i hate the most with PCcompany pc's is the horrid cases they have.

I agree with Tweak'e........... not sure about the cost of cases, but they will will the cheapest available, so they fill them up with all the other "top notch" goodies.

I suggest you shell out $70 for a tidy powered USB hub to go on your desk. This has proven to be money well spent for me with my multitude of game controllers. Actually while on that subject: Why can't you get a software gadget that can enable and disable controllers with a click in the system tray? So many games wil use the first controller they spot. eg. This is crap when you want to use the pad and the game can only see the steering wheel.....

USB 1.1 external powered hubs will cost around $70, but USB 2.0 external powered hubs will cost at least $100.
    http://www.gamma.co.nz has a D-Link USB 2.0 hub for around $120.
Its a good investment for the future.
Also works and backwards compatable with USB1.0 and 1.1 Hubs/Devices.

Thanks for the suggestions guys, but I think you missed something: we are talking about 40 PCs here - you want me to go and buy USB hubs for all of them? I don't think management would agreee...if each had front mounted USB prts (some do) then there wouldn't be any hassle.

Yes and I totally agree with PC Company cases being a pig - that pulling of the front cover to get to the screws is agony, as is the door covering the CD cover...why bother with it? Dump to cover to save money and install front USB ports instead. Problem solved!

    Hello Falvrez,

USB A to A extension cables are available for under $10.00, I usually bundle them with USB memory drives if one is not supplied by the manufacturer as it is a real pain in the butt plugging them in, especially if one slot is already in use.

You should be able to do a bit better for an order of around 40

    HI Alan

But you see this is what no one really wants - a(nother) loose cable hanging around waiting to be plugged in.

I see your point - this would solve the problem, but it's pretty messy and my main point is, each manufacturer should really have them at the front of the case regardless of the initial cost.

Well what do you want us to do about it? You've answered your own question; -buy systems with USB ports at the front.

    Right on BIFF

Most manufacturers do make front port cases, and all PCs here have them. Present PC has 4 at the back and 2 at the front....all USB 2.0

Overkill? I still use a hub to have less cabling. Just worked out I have 14 USB ports available...
