    Default Multi Booting Win98 & Win98!!!

I've checked the FAQ on multibooting but it hasn't answered this question:

Am I able to have the following set up?

Partition 1 (Primary): Win98SE with MS Office and other basic necessary progs.

Partition 2 (Primary): Win98SE with kids games and the trial software I like to throw on from time to time

Partition 3 (Extended) - Balance of Disk

Partition 4 (Logical - part of Part. 3): Data

    Partitions 5, 6 & 7 (Logical - part of Part 3): Linux Debian Distro

Boot Loader: Either LILO or a 3rd party loader (suggestions)

The reason for this interesting set up is to ensure I don't "stuff up" my wife as she needs consistent regular time on the computer and hates me playing with things that occasionally require fixing (NB: I have never lost any of her data, she has just had to wait for access on a few occasions) ;-)

    TIA
    Shroeder

P.S. Before you ask, I do have two copies of Win98SE.

The answer is yes! Use a boot loader like the free one at www.xosl.org. Use partition magic to set up your partitions - hide one of the primary partitions while you install Win98 on the other. Then boot back to partition magic and hide the first primary partition and install the second copy of Win98.

LILO is a good boot loader but can you install it independantly of Linux? I have also used XOSL and had no problems.

    Thanks for this John

I will use Parted to do my partitioning (I note it will let me set a partition flag to *hidden*)

Looking at the XOSL manual it seems to indicate I will need to *hide* the first partition if trying to boot the second?? Is this correct or am I misreading something?

the last simaler setup i saw didn't have hidden partitions so it ment the kids useing the other partition could access the other partition, kinda defeating the whole point of running dual setup. would have been better with user accounts.

if you make a partition hidden canyou still boot it or do you have to unhide it before you can bott from it?

Try Folder Guard to hide folders, Demo is free, Works great. There's another that'll help you out also, without the annoying pop-up after a while, I'll see if I can get the name and the URL

It can be done, as per JohnD's instructions, but C: for both copies of Win will have to be within the first 2gb of the HDD for them to boot.

    eg

    Partition 1 (Office C 1gb
    Partition 2 (Play C 1gb
then the remaining partitions can be past the 2gb mark. Windows can only boot from within the first 2gb.

???? i've seen a 20gig drive split into 2 eg 10 gig partitions with windows98 or me on both partitions working fine.

Maybe it was just DOS and Win95 that needed to be done like this.
