    Default Monitors

My monitor has taken to closing down after a period of inactivity. It has not gone to 'sleep' nor has the computer. I cannot do anything as I cannot see anything. The only way to get the computer back so I can use it is to press the reset and then restart the computer. The power and other settings have not been altered as I am not that far up on compters that I touch these. I have windows 98 and Norton anti virus running and nothing shows up on that. Any help would be appreciated.

If it was only the monitor, you would not have to reboot the computer.

As JM suggests, turning the monitor on and off would do it. If it requires the reboot then its the video signal that has likely diappeared, which may mean the PC or video card has a problem.

You say that the monitor hasnt gone to sleep, so I assume you have normal status LED on it. Pressing F4 should close the active application, do you see any disk activity?

thinking on this, with inactivity it will be hibernation quite likely. Hiberating computers dont always wake up, more of a coma really.

    Disable hibernation.

yeah i should have mentioned pressing quite a few keys quite a few times.

Not just tapping the keyboard, that could mean hitting its side.

Have you disabled the "energy star compliant" and tested for a few days to see what happens right click at the desk top (away from any icons) and go to properties , and it is there somewhere, like setting tab, then advanced...
