Probably a stupid question, have you installed OpenGL? Not sure if it is an OpenGL game or not?

What sort of HDD do you have? a 7200 rpm ATA 66 is preferable anything over 20 gig is fine.
you may need a better video card I recommend a Gforce 256 32 DDR memory for value also uninstall all programs unnecessary do a defrag and clean up using nortons.
run ad-aware thru your system as well , also wash and go is a nice cleanup program more ram never hurts either 128 megs or more if you can afford it.

For upgrades specific to gameplay, I'd say graphics card first, ram 2nd, and hard drive last.

Defrag and running Adaware, etc wouldn't hurt either... nor does making sure you don't have any progs running in the background which might be sucking up system resources... eg. virus scan running during a game...

    what os?

what happens when you wind the game detail down? go better or no change?

whats the minimum spec of the game?

    have you got vsync off?

whats the game run in? openGL or directX?

there are heaps of tweaks and hardware upgrades but it depends on exactly how much you need.

IL2 is an excellent sim and your system should handle it fine.
First, make sure you have the latest drivers for your graphics card. Download them from the manufacturers web site.
Next go into the folder where you installed IL2 and run the IL2set-up.exe file. Check that you have OpenGL highlighted and you could try a lower video mode setting. Also uncheck the intro video box in the bottom left hand corner.
Also there are several upgrades that you should download and install from This should help.
If you want to get into online flying, get HyperLobby which is free from You'll find quite a few NZ servers that you can join.

    Hope this helps.

Your best bet for a speed boost for games would be a new qraphics card perhaps a PIXELVIEW Geforce4 MX 420 or 440 (the 440 is a fair bit better) from , or for around $179 - $230 (depending on which card you choose) or if you have enough $ get the graphics card and some more ram (especially if running winxp).
256MB SDRAM's about $100 and 256MB DDR2100 (if your Mother board supports it) is about $110.
