The most unprepared and least capable generations ever are about to face challenges never faced before, in such an overwhelming inevitability, by the human race; all brought on by that very thing, far too many humans consuming finite resources and polluting their eco-system acting as if they are actually going somewhere or have a goal that can be achieved collectively if they work hard enough.

Nuclear Reactors for electricity were seriously considered in NZ , they even had a few possible sites lined up , including not too far from Auckland.

But it turned out, NZ couldnt afford the cost. They arnt cheap .
And you want several to make all the support infrastructure cost effective .

Part of the reason they used the deigns of the past, is they where also used to make/enrich plutonium/uranium for bombs, so designed to also do that .
Thats one reason the safer Thorium reactors werent developed , Thorium reactors cant make fuel for Nuke Bombs .
That could be why Iran built their Nuclear reactor , and why Israel bombed it .
