Default Chernobyl: The Lost Tapes | Official Trailer | HBO

New Movie to be released soon:

    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5kxUOKqSxNs

"Haunting scenes of the death, destruction and sickness that followed the Chernobyl meltdown 36 years ago — the deadliest nuclear accident of all time — were recorded on film and video but remained hidden for decades. Now, these previously unknown stories are finally coming to light, in a new HBO documentary, "Chernobyl: The Lost Tapes.""

"Chernobyl's reactor explosion killed two plant workers, and 29 more people, many of them firefighters who rushed to battle the blaze, later died from radiation poisoning, according to the International Atomic Energy Agency. Over the years that followed, cancer rates skyrocketed among Ukrainian children, climbing by about 90%, Live Science previously reported. In 2006, a report commissioned by Greenpeace International estimated that over 93,000 people in Ukraine, Belarus and Russia died from illnesses linked to radiation exposure from Chernobyl.

The report further stated that approximately 270,000 people in those countries who developed cancers, would not have done so had they not been exposed to the high levels of radiation produced by the accident."

It's not the least charm of a theory that it is refutable. The hundred-times-refuted theory of "free will" owes its persistence to this charm alone; some one is always appearing who feels himself strong enough to refute it - Friedrich Nietzsche

Good reminder for all those who keep touting nuclear power as "Green" and "Safe"...

The firefighters boots and clothes are still in the hospital basement , even the boots are still radioactive .
The firefighters bodies were so radioactive they were buried in lead coffins entombed in concrete

There is still the small issue about what to do with all the radioactive waste
In the US , alot is stockpiled onsight in containers . Originally supposed to be temporary storage , but just left there as no one wants to deal with it .

The Japanese want to pump it into the sea (and they have been ) .

I watched that doco/movie about Pierre and Marie Curie a couple of weeks ago. Enjoyed it and there was something minor I wanted to check so went to Google. While reading I noticed the bit where it said her papers were locked away and to view them, even today, you have to put on protective clothing. But then, when you look at "half life" durations, its going to be for a long time!

It is these days providing you don't get the Russians to build it. The British are looking at small nuke stations to replace their coalfired plants.

And what about Fukushima, then? Russians didn't build that. Unforeseen events could put even the best designed plant at risk.

Very foolish to think that a natural disaster (or operational error, war, etc) will never affect any nuclear station. History already shows that's not true.

Some of our dams on the Waikato may collapse in an earthquake which would cause great problems. But then, next Tuesday at 2.29am, a meteorite may hit Planet Earth.

    Gosh, the possibilities are scary!

We wont really have much choice though, if the world wants to stop burning coal, gas & oil for electricity generation

True, but you can clean up debris from a flood. You can remove mud and rebuild buildings. You can't do much of anything if a place is covered in radioactive fallout.

With meteor strikes, there's nothing you can do about it, so that's pretty much irrelevant.

But you can choose to build a nuclear power station or not, and if you do, you're also inviting the risk that comes with it.
