I found the story a little amusing, the way the driver tells it makes it sound like the car had an accident all by itself.
"While driving southbound on I 65 in West Lafayette Indiana on October 15th at approximately 5 AM my car hydroplaned while in auto pilot hitting the left median cement barrier with my front driver side bumper then sliding to the side of the road
Instead of admitting he was driving too fast in wet conditions and hit a patch of water, which would be my guess. The auto pilot is immaterial except to make it seem like it wasn't the drivers fault

Those battery fires are concerning, but it is a relatively rare event and not likely to be a problem with newer battery technologies as they emerge. If I am ever lucky enough to drive a Tesla I must remember to try and not have a life threatening accident in it

People are just putting the cars on auto then climbing into the backseat and going to sleep or whatever, you can see how that would lead to problems, apparently there are devices available to defeat the cars ability to detect no human driver in drivers seat.

There have been a few crashes caused by the 'self drive' mode and at least 1 death .
Its hard to believe the US allowed that in cars , given all the other safety features required by law .

Here's a lengthy and informative article on the Tesla "self-driving" LOL.
