    Question Fibre Provider Reccomendations

    Hi everyone,

So i've just had an offer accepted on a house (first one), and am looking for options for fibre.

    What are people using/would reccomend?

Looking at getting gigabit ideally, but keen to hear what your thoughts are.

    Cheers.
Speed has never killed anyone, suddenly becoming stationary... That's what gets you.

I don't have specific experience with gigabit but for typical use I just go with a cheaper 100/20 plan. I've had good experience and on discussion forums 2Degrees is good, so is Big Pipe which which is Spark Telecom. I have known people and I help set it up for them, they used Big Pipe and now Skinny primarily due to the free months included under a contract.

20 Mbit upload is a bit lame these days, what with online backups etc. And worse than the 30Mbit I get on old VDSL!

I'd go for something with 50Mbit upload at least. Or just get a Fibre max plan etc.

Who to go with --- Ask several people and you'll all get different answers. They are really much of a muchness. Some people have problems with one provider yet others don't have any problems at all.

Usually when there's problems its often tracked back to the owners equipment or their locations, not the actual provider.

As for plans - go with the biggest you can afford, always better to have more in spare than struggle. Here we are with Vodafone Fibre Max (their old name) in the house we get the top end speed, yet in the workshop its slower (I know what, one day I'll get around to sorting it) and its noticeable when downloading the differences.

I would say avoid Vodafone .
Their reputation is terrible , from tech support to basic things like billing .

Im happy with Spark. Not the cheapest but support has been good over the last 15 years .

AND Heres what I was referring to
Ask several people and you'll all get different answers.
I'm with Vodafone, have been for over 30 years, never really had any major problems, just the usual odd outages or slow that every ISP has.

When ever I have to call them to either upgrade or change the plan always get through within a couple of rings. Other customers I deal with, if you tell them what to say there's never a problem. Any time I've rung them even from customers houses never long waits, 5 min max.

The Other month, vodafone tried to change a customer to Fibre - He asked me for advise -- he already had the old Vodafone Cable (and older plan) told him to call and TELL them he wants UltraFast HFC the top end plan.

Then all that happens is the guy from Chorus shows up, changes the modem/Router activates it and away you go. Made an appointment for the following week - All done and dusted.

Don't know exactly what he said to them but he got it at a lower cost as well as a whole lot of extras for nothing. He's on the same plan as myself, 900Mbps+ Down / 100Mbps Up.

Half the time the problems (with any ISP) is they either have someone who doesn't know what they are doing on the phones / Help lines OR the person them selves don't know what they actually want.

Heard and had some horror stories with Spark as well.-- So depends who you talk to.

One thing one of the chorus guys said to me a couple of years ago - if you can stay with the cable do so, Fibre is not as cracked up as its meant to be.

Just adding to above this is from Vodafones HFC, MANY ISP's wont tell you this or its hidden deep in the documentation.

But, “Gigabit” describes the network speed capability, and not the actual speed you will experience.
Actual user speeds will vary and are affected by various factors including how you’re connected to the internet (using a Gigabit Ethernet cable is better than WiFi, which could have a large impact on speed), the hardware and software used, number of devices connected, time of day, and where the data is downloaded from. In good conditions, we expect you’ll get download speeds of 700-900 Mbps and upload speeds of 90-95 on our HFC Max plan.

Spark's Unplan Max with landline @$120/month is the best by far....max you pay is $120 regardless of what you use literally...around 947mbs to 1gbs download and have had up to 650mbs upload...always consistent too...

My son uses heaps for gaming always....

Been with Telecom/Spark since 1995 with zero issues....Best by far.....Cheap is for Muppets....Spark not the best price....but are the best for reliability....what with Chorus tie in etc...

    +1 Vodafone
