New laptop to replace Toshiba L55-c5392 Bought 05.08.16

I have a Toshiba L55-c5392 Bought 05.08.16 which is falling apart and will need replacing soon it's still working well. So would I need another i7 for same performance? Mainly used for general browsing.

Core and thread counts have increased, and they are inconsistent across CPU names - i5 might have 4 or 6 cores, and may or may not have twice as many threads for example.

If you just want the same level of performance any current INTEL or AMD machine with 4 cores and 8 threads should be about the same as your existing laptop provided it has an SSD and 16 GB of RAM like your old machine.

A modern i5 or ryzen 5 will likely outperform your older i7, a modern i7 or ryzen 7 will be better again.
That means any i5 / ryzen 5 or better. Some may have 6 cores depending on model. Modern i7 / Ryzen 7 should have 8 cores / 16 threads, but maybe not. Mobile CPU naming is a mess.

And I assumed you meant physically falling apart but functioning well, if you wanted to try your hand at it some have managed to DiY compact desktop style machines out of old laptops try youtube for some Ideas if that's your cup of tea.
