Default Car Insurance Premiums and Age

I had wondered why my mum pays so much for her car valued at $4900. $70.82 a month, with a no claims bonus and a multi-saver deal.....
So I tried a quote with the same details: same address, same car, same value, same excess selection, and no claims as details.just using my dob. It came out to $43 a month.

    So then I tried AA.
Her premium was $100 on a value of $3000 for car, the max value they allowed.
My premium is $45 on a value of $3000.

My mum is 30 years older than me. Interesting is it not?
I wonder where the cut off point is. Over 80? Over 75? Over 70? Can't be bothered messing with the DOBs to see.

I can understand if say you have a few claims, accidents and the like, but on none, just based purely on a difference of age??

Jeez my total insurance with 5yr old car, house, contents and some specified things such as jewelry and photography gear is only $91/month. I am 79 in October. We are with Tower.

We were with Vero for 35 years and about 5 years ago the premiums started to increase to the stage where 2 years ago I shopped around and settled on Tower. Vero was going to increase to $120 at that time. Probably be $140-150/month by now.

Sadly Tower sucks. Husband had many customers with Tower, that ended with arguments and them not paying out (plumbing) for damage caused by various issues.

I guess it depends on values.

I tried this with AA and AMI:

    House Rebuild value $559000 - $159
    Contents $113000 - $82

They came out around the same premium regardless of DOB etc, so it is based on sum insured.

The care though....rip off. OK she is over 85 which a bit of a fiddle seemed to be the point of increase.

The 'old' car drivers have a higher than normal rate of accidents . Traffic cop told me that .

So , its expected insurance will be excessive. Just as it is for Teenages wanting their own insurance
Also Health insurance gets more expensive .

Insurance companies charge based on risk. They honestly dont really want to insure higher risk drivers .

Piroska Were your plumbing issues with black polybutylene piping? None of the insurance companies will now cover damage from this I believe.

    No. Not mine.

Husband would come across jobs were say the cylinder leaked.....or a pipe burst, or something like that.
Or even sink oveflowed or some such.

So insurance won't cover the plumbing repairs...but most cover the damage resulting....like particle board floor getting wet, carpet wet and so on.
Tower never paid out, or did so after a massive fight about it. It's been on Fair Go too.

    Thats why he hated Tower.

    Not the Dux Quest thing.

A long time ago, I had to take State to the Insurance Council over a car claim. Beat the bastards too. Then cancelled all my insurance, house, contents and car.

Why? they whined, we let you off that claim. To which, I made a raspberry noise and Said F... Off, if that's how you do business I'm not interested in you.

Decades ago in late 1960s I was with State. I had 2 car accidents -both other parties' fault . The other parties readily accepted it was their fault. State delayed and delayed on a pretext before paying out. I vowed never to deal with them again and have badmouthed them ever since

    Yes.
I am not fond of State.
    But not Tower either.

So when AMI decided to drop the sum insured value of my car by $4000 after 1 year I got annoyed.
It was $8000 at first, Redbook and various other car value sites rated it $8000 ish too, after the year was up.

They did it again the year after so I swapped to AA.
Who happily insured it for that and are not dropping it by so much each year.

I did consider Cove but don't know much about them.

I think they did it cause I originally had house, contents and car and then just had car.
Only reason I can think of, they never did it before, even with my cheap junk cars I had with them.

My mums, well she is selling the car now so we'll get rid of that premium altogether.

My granddad even at 80 years old had pretty low insurance costs but he was with the same company for decades and never made a claim that I know of.

    They must have loved him!
