Default HDD gone RAW ... back to NFTS but not accessible

    Hi all

So I've been having some fun wit a 3.5" WD 1TB HDD that for some unknown reason, decided to go RAW on me (possibly covid related)

It was partitioned into Drive E & F of equal capacity. I used cmd prompt and chkdsk /r and managed to get drive E back to NFTS and it's sowing it has data on it, but unfortunately, I can't get access to it ... drive F goes through the chkdsk OK, but right at the end has a "unidentified error" and won't revert back to NFTS.

I'm just wondering whether there's a step I'm missing to get access and I've tried going through cmd promt again to try and see the files, copy them and even tried "Recuva" to see what's on there ... not accessible to all attempts.

I'd appreciate it if someone could point me in the right direction.

    TIA

    OOPS wrong command for starters

"Recuva" isn't that good really, ok for basic deletions but not much more.

Have a read https://www.easeus.com/data-recovery...ormatting.html Will give you some options. Recovering the data 1st should have been the 1st action. That also gives some reasons as to why the drive went RAW to start with, generally theres a problem starting withthe drive, often ( but not always) bad Sectors.

Depending on how imprortant , "MUST" get the data recovered you may have to use paid software that will work.

READ THIS 1st: Another good article on what how when and why https://www.diskinternals.com/partit...fs-in-2-steps/ Actually used this software a few times.

Just a thought -- You can try using Linux to see if you can see / recover the data - Noidea if it would work or not ??

Thanks Wainui ... That wasn't the cmd I used, that was my typo !! The data isn't that important, just trying to help a mate out and have something to do during lockdown !!

    Cheers.

Best not to run Chkdsk on a drive that's gone corrupt without first checking SMART.

If there are reallocated or pending sectors in SMART, do NOT run chkdsk as there may well be more data loss or even outright failure if the drive is in poor condition.

Best to make an image of the drive with ddrescue in Linux, then run something like GetDataBack etc on the image, read-only.

Most of the "FREE" recovery software isnt actually free .

I use Getdataback, but thats not free either .

    Testdisk is free
    https://www.cgsecurity.org/wiki/TestDisk

minitool Free version gives 1GB of data recovery for free
    https://www.minitool.com/data-recove...r-windows.html

Sometimes booting off a Linux CD will do the the trick , Win is more fussy with HD's state than Linux .
Have a close listen to the drive. If its making weird noises , clicks, spinning up & down , it may be a lost cause

Chances are the HD is stuffed . Trying to make it usable again may not be a good idea .

Testdisk is pretty good for a free tool.

I also like FileScavenger but that requires purchase.
