Buzz Words of yesterytear

After the comments about current buzz words that we feel are overused i thought let's recall ones or expressions that seem to have fallen into disuse so I 'll start.

Swot -I was amazed in 2017 when t asked a student if she had been partying or doing swot for her Uni studies.
She asked "what is swot?'

Snazzy - neat - fab (or fabulous) - up the buhy (boohigh) - knackered or shagged - hooha (or hooey)

Some are older than you might think:



Idiot
Ancient Greece people who didn’t participate in the political process or in their community
The Greek word idiotes was used to describe those people, who were considered ignorant and overly preoccupied with themselves.

Moron
Also Ancient Greek word móros, meaning “foolish” or “stupid.”


friend as a verb
Sometime in the 1400s, if not earlier the earliest examples of the verb friend from the OED, it just means "to make friends."

In the 1880s, dude had a negative ring to it. A dude was a dandy, someone very particular about clothes, looks, and mannerisms, who affected a sort of exaggerated high-class persona.

Hipster shows up in a 1941 dictionary of “hash house lingo,” meaning “a know-it-all.”

1915: “She’s some babe.”

When I was at school in the late 50s "cool" was the in word. Everything that you liked was "cool." It is a buzz word of yesteryear that has survived into today.

But 'cool' begat offspring: 'uncool.'
