Default Windows Explorer cannot read file

I plugged in a old SSD with Win7 OS on it to my Win10 PC.

Win 10 cannot read the disk. I want to retrieve some files from the old SSD before formatting it.

    Any hope?

Boot from a Linux will help? Which bistro to recommend?

You can't open the drive at all, or just can't copy a specific file?

It couldn't read the drive at all. I took out the drive, put it in a USB external case and connected it to laptop with Win7 to retrieve the data.

I remember long time ago, when I tried to install Win10 on a HP laptop with Win7, but couldn't proceed as Win10 says it can't install on that disk, as it's of different type of file format -- something to that effect.
In the end, I used diskpart to erase everything, then only Win10 completed the installation.
I don't understand why Win10 is behaving so weirdly.
