Can any of you remember when your parents were responsible for you, and your behaviour, until you were 21?
I must be dreaming.

The problems we face today are because the people who work for a living are now outnumbered by those who vote for a living.
I was working for my parents, initially in my school holidays, and then from when I left school until they sold their business when I was 20, so my parents were responsible for me - until that time - but I was definitely responsible for my own behaviour. It was just something that was expected of my brothers and I.
So, no. My parents were not responsible for me until I was 21. I'm certain that they thought that they had instilled in me - and my brothers - to be responsible for ourselves and our behaviour long before we were 21, although, legally, they were responsible.

Us husbands are a sorry lot.
I was working and self supporting from the age of 15. I do not think I would have listened to anyone else back then even if perhaps I should have.
I know a few peoples in their late 20s at work, and they still live with their parents. Not easy finding a suitable place in Wellington or Auckland these days.
Possibly because they live with their parents, they aren't as "wild or unruly or undisciplined" as some of ny generation were at their age
I vaguely remember that if you broke the law your parents could be held responsible because until you were 21 you were considered a Minor.
So, if you threw a brick through a shop window Dad could be held responsible for the repairs.
It came to mind when I was reading about teenagers trashing places and I thought well why don't they send the repair bill to Dad, after all if they had been brought up properly it wouldn't have happened.

Its 18. That shows how out of date those laws are
"Guardianship lasts until you turn 18 years of age, or until you get married, enter a civil union, or live with someone as a de facto partner"
at 16 you can leave home , leave school, get a job, get a car etc . So how could a parent be held responsible after 16, when 16 year old have so many rights of independence ?
That's what I thought but take a look at THIS
You can do anything at 18 but you're no an adult until you're 20.
Who the hell wrote all this rubbish?![]()

More to the point:
10 Years
You can be held criminally responsible if you kill someone.
12 Years
You can be criminally responsible for other serious crimes.
14 Years
You legally stop being a ‘child’ and become a ‘young person’. This means that you can be held criminally responsible for breaking any law.
