Default Why don't they just call everyone "male" and be done with it?

There are many words in the English language that are either male or female, but it seems that many people, these days, are not aware of that fact and call everyone by the male word even though the person they are speaking of is female.

Examples are: male actor and female actress - male aviator and female aviatrix - male god and female godess, just to name a few. There are many more I'm certain you are aware.

Of course, it's a well known fact that they never have 2 women pilots together. Reason being, ...... Someone has to park the darned thing!

A couple of years ago I was flying Tauranga to Brisbane via Auckland and was waiting in a queue at Tauranga to board a little Dash 8, when two appropriately dressed young ladies climbed the steps and sat up the front of the plane.

The wife was with me and I remarked “Holy C..p, two Sheila’s are flying the plane”.

A chap in front heard me and advised “Well at least they don’t have to back it” which was of some comfort.

I needn’t have worried, the flight was uneventful.

Or maybe they just don't care to distinguish a career by gender.

Could be worse: All German nouns are included in one of three grammatical genders: masculine, feminine or neuter.

French is the same, e.g. le, la and les.
