About that age I was given the Dick Smith Funway kitset and loved it (but I was already interested in electronics).

Jaycar's Short Circuits series is practically the same thing. (But Funway stuff always turns up on TradeMe too).

I do wonder though - what has your grandson expressed interest in? Does he actually like electronics, or do his interests lie somewhere completely different?

I've tried that software and I don't like it.

I've simulated real, working circuits in it, only to have the software blow the components up and tell me the design was no good.

(Good) simulators can be useful, but one must always be aware they are never perfect, and some (like Yenka) are worse than others.
