Default Why is it called "The Boneyard"?

There is a story in the news lately of the first Qantas aircraft to leave the Alice Springs Boneyard.

But why do they call it a Boneyard? I have seen an aerial shot of the area and there are many planes on the ground, but no bones.

So why such a strange name?

I know that. But you haven't answered the question. Why is it called the boneyard?

    Slang. a cemetery.
Slang. an area where old or discarded cars, ships, planes, etc., are collected prior to being broken up for scrap or otherwise disposed of.

Thank you, Piroska. I had not heard that term before. I would have called it a scrap yard, particularly if it was for cars.

Its just the yanks trying to wind you up with their US English

Not many would watch a documentary about a junk yard , but have been plenty of doco's on 'boneyards' .
