Default Wifi Mesh Vs Router Mesh

    Hi

In terms of reliability and performance is it better to have 2x Asus Router Mesh or 1x Asus Router with a Asus Wifi Mesh device such as ASUS ZenWiFi?

    Thanks

Buy a bundled mesh package , rather than bolt on bits & devices
Use network cable as backhaul :ie connect the mesh units via network cable

Mesh that connects to other mesh nodes via wifi is a glorified extender .
That would be convenience, not reliability or performance .

As 1101 Posted get the full setup.

All they are usually only Wireless extenders They are NOT an actual Mesh as advertised.

A True mesh would mean you can take out any node (extender) and still get the full connections, these fake usually wont be setup as such.

To see what I mean, google "full mesh network topology diagram" Remove any connection and another would take its place /route.

These so called Mesh are more of a Ring Topology than mesh.

Ohhh sh!te!!. We have just had Vod. HFC installed and still have their 2 X SuperWifi mesh units to come, "fancy having to pay the bill first".

Think we will get our PC Guru in to install this set-up.

    lurking.

Are you saying the Asus Aimesh function on routers is a wifi expander and not a mesh network?

    Thanks

They would work as a mesh IF all the Nodes were close enough to one another and get signals from all at approx even strength.

    A real simple example.

    Router ---- extender 1 ------ Extender 2 ------- extender 3 --Extender 4 -- Extender 5

Lets say extender 1 is picking up the signal from the router - sends it down to a room, which has extender 2, which in turn pushes it to Extender 3, which in turn pushes it to Extender 4, which in turn pushes it to Extender 5

NOW remove extender 1 --- 2,3,4 & 5 are dead ducks unless one other Extender can somehow pick up a signal from the router. (which they cant as they are not in range)

The Very bad drawing Below Shows it more clearly.

The blues are Either the Router (bottom Left) remainder are the "extenders". The Circles represent the wireless signal and how they over lap to create the "Mesh"(or dont).

Remove Number ONE, 2-5 are dead ducks - no connection to the router. (common setup in most homes)

If 4 was removed, 5 is a dead duck as it cant connect to 1,2 or 3.

A TRUE mesh you could take any one of the 5 Extenders out and another would pick up the slack, all but weaker.

If you have a look at the Asus Aimesh Demo, ALL units are overlapping the signal and each other( thats a mesh), BUT in Reality not many people have a Router in the middle of their home and Extenders equally spaced, normally its router one end of the house pushing a signal to the other. (more like the Picture)
