    Default An unexpected visitor

The joys of living in the bush. This handsome thing was sitting on my kitchen bench when I came down this morning.

weta's are very good at pushing under things and levering them up.
most kiwi homes have a lot of holes. eg wooden floor all the drain pipe holes are not sealed. really easy for anything to crawl up the drain pipe and get under the kitchen bench or bath etc.
    Tweak it till it breaks

Male wētā are smaller than females Tree wētā males have larger heads than females
The males have much larger jaws than the females
And the really obvious thing is the ovipositor. This is a long spiny looking thing sticking out the back end.
So the ladies can lay their eggs....

And Giant wetas are endangered....Click image for larger version.
