The Unobtanium comes from the Science Fiction Movie "Avatar" and is used to demonstrate the foolishness of thinking Wind Farms, Solar Panels and Batteries will solve our energy problems.

I was rather hoping some of our Green Members would point out some serious miscalculations in this chaps statements, but it seems he may well be correct.

Unobtanium dates back to the 50's as an engineering term, Avatar didn't invent it.

Is anyone actually suggesting wind and solar alone can supply our energy needs? I haven't heard that claim from anywhere before watching the video. Rather I think they are suggested as a green way to supplement other energy production rather than burning fossil fuels where practical.
I also believe the proposed Idea for the USA was to create a nationwide grid on the premise that there is always wind blowing somewhere and a lot more sunshine hours over the whole width of the country, currently most states power grids are independent I believe. Batteries are required but not to the extent suggested.

I'm sure the video makes valid points, but I'm also fairly certain it's showing the worst case from a doom and gloom perspective while pushing oil as being a whole lot cheaper. I wonder who might be behind that argument.

Personally I think nuclear holds a lot more promise than most are willing to give it credit for and if the world population continues to grow it may be the only solution, current nuclear power plants are based on world war 2 technology (much refined I'm sure). I'm also sure fossil fuels are on the way out and a lot of industries who depend on them are working to delay that as much as possible for economical reasons not environmental ones.

Well, personally, Iím in favour of Kryponite over Unobtanium.

Neither are of any use, but what the hell.

As for Wind Farms and Solar Panels producing anything Commercial (Cost v Return) in the way of Electricity, you have to be dreaming.

For me, Hydro is so far ahead, the rest donít score, but if you have little Water, or Fall, then Nuclear or Fossil is an even choice. But, if I had to choose, then Fossil, because our plants would like 10% more CO2.

But for NZ, itís Hydro all the way.

    Interesting Link that one MushHead.

I thought the old Popular Mechanics magazine had died 50-60 years ago.

One thing we can rely on here is someone is totally wrong.

Iíve laid my cards on the table, but Hydro isnít a consideration by either of the others.

Solar could, in some parts of the world.
    Wind also...Wellington perhaps?

But we do OK with hydro which most power comes from.
