    Asus is good ,
Dell : good hardware (or was), ph support used to be REALLY bad some years back.
Lenovo : Good , but often riddled with preloaded crapware , the Lenovo crapware can cause issues (blocking webcam use)
Pretty much all brands have good & dud's . They are all just assembled from parts made by 3rd parties :-)

Just make sure it has an SSD Hard drive . That makes all the differnce in Win10.
And then uninstall Norton/mcaffee that some new laptops come preloaded with .

My first task will be to remove crapware, Norton, MS Office, etc. SSD is a must, at least 256, I will aim for 512. 16 Gb RAM is an overkill for what my wife uses the laptop for but it will future-proof it. I recently upgraded both of my home desktop PC's to 16 Gb RAM and now don't worry how many Chrome tabs, etc. are open.

Thanks for your info - everyone else also.

Get a usb adapter to suit the old HDD (may be sata or ide interface), and copy off whatever data you need, if you want/need to, and if the drive is still readable.

Good idea. I was thinking of removing the laptop's HD and using a SATA (or whatever it is called) cable to the mobo of my desktop.
