Actually, I've seen it stated that the only good way to extinguish a lithium battery fire is water.... lots and lots of water to a) remove the heat, and b) flood out the air feeding the fire.

But , one way to safely kill LiPo batts is drop them in salty water .Ive done this with my failing RC Lipo batts
I guess being underwater they are smothered & safe .

Lithium batts dont need any air to burn, thats why they are so hard to put out. They can generate their own oxygen when ruptured/overheated etc .
You need to smother the flames (eg with sand) , but will still be reacting .

In todays Driven there is an article about new batteries.........not lithium. Some while away yet but they have been developed.
