Electric vehicles are great with all the advantages that Dugimodo has listed, the big but though is the batteries which are dammed expensive to replace, will not last forever and are not environmentally friendly either in production or in eventual disposal.
The government is already talking about increasing the tax on petrol with the aim of reducing its use. It will be like the tax on tobacco products eventually rising and making it far more expensive than ordinary people are able to afford. That will get petrol powered vehicles off the road.
Nobody in power seems to have even considered how we are going to produce or to distribute all the extra electricity that we will need.

While this is all very interesting, what has it got to do with: I Can Remember......... - not much nostalgia there. Pity. Some recollections of the past would have been fascinating.

For example: Did you used to ride the trams in the 50s? Those were the days of the penny section (roughly the equivalent of one cent). On a wet day we were given a penny to take the tram to school - there were no school buses in Wellington. We would have a look to see which end of the tram the conductor was and we would board at the opposite end. We would be at our school stop before the conductor got to our end to collect our fare so we had a penny to spend at the sweet shop and in the 50s one penny bought a lot of sweets.

I'm sure you and a few others on this site will relate to this little poem Roscoe.

I remember the cheese of my childhood
and the bread that we cut with a knife.
When the children helped with the housework,
and the men went to work, not the wife.
The cheese never needed a fridge
and the bread was so crusty and hot.
    The children were seldom unhappy
and the wife was content with her lot.
I remember the milk from the bottle,
with the yummy cream on the top.
Our dinner came hot from the oven,
and not from the fridge in the shop
The kids were a lot more contented,
they didn't need money for kicks.
Just a game with their mates in the road
    and sometimes the Saturday flicks.
I remember the shop on the corner,
where a pen'orth of sweets was sold.
Do you think I'm a bit too nostalgic?
Or is it....I'm just getting old?
I remember the 'loo' was the lavvy
and the bogey man came in the night.
It wasn't the least bit funny
going "out back" with no light.
Hung on a peg in that loo,
    were interesting items to view,
    from newspapers cut into squares.
It took little to keep us amused.
Dirty clothes were boiled in the copper,
with plenty of rich foamy suds.
But the ironing seemed never ending
    as Mum pressed everyone's 'duds'.
I remember the slap on my backside
and the taste of soap if I swore.
Anorexia and diets weren't heard of
and we hadn't much choice what we wore.
Do you think that bruised our ego?
    or our initiative was destroyed?
We ate what was put on the table
and I think life was better enjoyed.
But a huge fact not hereto mentioned
in this tale of nostalgic rejoice,
is the reason we all "enjoyed" our lot
    We had NO BLOODY CHOICE!
    Global Warming is Mann made.
    .
The problems we face today are because the people who work for a living are now outnumbered by those who vote for a living.

I take no responsibility for the accuracy of any media links I quote.

Loved your poem, thank you, B.M.

"We ate what was put on the table." And if we did not eat it, it was there at the next meal, and the next until we ate it. While we were not poor, we could not afford to waste food, so we ate everything and were thankful for it.

And that last line was very true.
