easiest way is probably to install a good codec pack. its been a long time so i can't really recommend any.

Installing a 3rd party codec pack is my last resort, seeing as I don't have unsupported file problems - I'd rather stick with the Windows built-in codecs if possible, especially as there really shouldn't be any problems using them on a standard Win 10 installation. Having said that, is there any way I can uninstall / reinstall the default codecs, before looking at 3rd party options?

If you are still having a problem after trying out all you can think of a system reset is likely to do the trick. Just be sure to have a copy of any passwords you may require to reinstall programs that are not included in the windows installation before you do it.

provided the audio is the only issue, i would install codec pack before doing a system reset.
no idea how to deal with windows built in codecs, the 3rd party is almost always better.

Try a driver cleaner/uninstaller program, then reinstall your original drivers?
