That is not a MS problem. You cannot expect to receive support for something they do not manufacture. That is like expecting a Tesla dealer to have spare parts for a 20 year old Lada. Having said that most of the generic drivers MS supplies work just fine with most equipment.

I don't agree, it IS a MS problem if the previous Win10 build worked with the current drivers. Microsoft has broken compatibility with them. They're also the ones who want to force updates on everyone.

Perhaps it's understandable if you are changing between major OS versions eg: WinXP and Vista with significant system changes, but within the same OS (Win10) it does not make sense.

I have never seen this scenario before, where a device that was supported in a previous major version of Windows, was later unsupported on that same major version of Windows.

My Control Panel is still there. no change.

I have a Control Panel short-cut in the Start Menu, it's there and works.

That will be true under the old model of OS, but windows 10 is not like that, its now a service meaning the upgrades are simply changing and ongoing, some features may be removed or some added, they are all windows 10.

There will not be a windows 11, 12 etc.

Often what happens with Drivers is the company responsible may have gone out of business or decided no longer to create new drivers for some hardware, when this happens its then upto someone else to sort the problem.

Take the conexant Driver problem -- conexant closed down in 2017, so for the last 3 years the hardware works fine, but WHO now needs to make the drivers to support a product they don't have to keep upto date ??

Microsoft get drivers from the hardware manufactures so if the business is now Defunct, that's not up to MS to run their old business.

Other Places like nVidia and ATI all keep up with the changes.

Taking it a bit further -- Linux Mint 20 -- I got a PC here that will run mint 18 and earlier perfectly fine, as well as any version of Windows, but with mint 20 it all turns to , graphics are crashing left right and centre.

I have a Control Panel short-cut in the Start Menu, it's there and works.

Its not the old control panel as such. if you right click on This PC / properties, or go into the Control Panel - System it then should open the new interface, as the link provided mentions

None of us know for sure what Windows will be 3,4 years from now .

Im sure MS want to move Win to a subsription based service/product , and that option is there allready ( sort of )
To force everyone onto subcription based Windows Lic , they will need to make Win a new ~number~ (even if its the same more or less under the hood) .
Just speculation .

MS say on their site that they are still working on the conexant thing. I could just uninstall the driver as the sound does still work if they are disabled

I know exactly where you're coming from, and I totally get it.

But I can imagine that this is going to cause a lot of consternation.

"But Windows 10 used to work on my computer, why doesn't it now?"

"Why has windows 10 decided it doesn't like my printer any more?"

This audio driver malarkey is only the beginning of it. At least with brand new major versions of an OS, its easier for people to understand.

They can see it as a separate product with separate compatibility etc.

But I expect most computer users wouldn't have a clue what "build" even means in a software context, and why their hardware suddenly doesn't work with the same old Windows 10 that they've had working just fine up until now.

Many computor users seem to be aware that Windows updates can & do stop things working .

Years of buggy untested ( not properly tested) updates has done wonders for MS's reputation .
Scan To PC (via printer to PC) being broken by build updates seems to be the latest .
Add to that updates being run (forced) at the worst of times for some

Build updates continually downloading failing to install , auto rolled back , downloading failing to install , auto rolled back, downloading failing to install , auto rolled back, downloading failing to install , auto rolled back, downloading failing to install , auto rolled back,downloading failing to install , auto rolled back, downloading failing to install , auto rolled back......

I take it that if you purchased a nice new car, and the Air Bags failed, you wouldn’t claim on the Car Manufacturer because they didn’t make the Air Bags.

That s not a good example really -- the Air bags failing ?? OK that's usually caused by a crash of some sort -- So why didn't the person stop in time, was it the cars fault or was it the driver. 99% of the time it would be the driver to some degree, either themselves or someone else, again NOT the cars fault, and whose to say the air bags weren't damaged in the impact causing failure ?

But -- Totally different things cars and computers. A windows computer -- its uncommon a MS product installed will fail, if it does its often caused by some other rouge or stray driver / program. That's one of the reasons why a lot of the newer Computers ( from the retail shops) are coming out by default with Windows 10 S installed. Easy to change and doesn't cost a cent to do so.

Since you like using the cars so much -- What the answer here -- You go to the service station, you put in Diesel into a petrol car, it causes all problems -- now whose at fault ?? Its not the Car manufacture - Its not diesel Producer -- By your reckoning Cant go blaming the owner as the nozzle still fitted into the tank ?????
