My first encounter with a disk drive was at Uni in Europe in the early 70's. The IBM drive unit was literally the size of a washing machine. To insert the massive disk pack you opened the top of the drive and lowered the pack onto the spindle. You then had to flick your wrist in exactly the right way to engage the lock. I could never get the damn thing in.
It was in this period they came up with a new-fangled thingy called a "floppy disk", 8 inches diameter. Those were the days...
