    Default Grr...expenses again

We changed the oil in my car. And my mums. She said oh I'll take it in.
Now up there we could have an oil change done for $50.

I looked online, cheapest I could see, a garage, $125. From.. it said though.
    Worst $199.

Most in between, like Honda, Toyota etc. And Oil Changers pretty bad too.

    So no.

Easy I said, undo plug, oil falls out, nut back in, fill it up. Then take the oil to BP or Super cheap.

er...no. Apparently that's an Akld thing, the only place here is the rubbish Tip, min charge $13.

Of course, everything costs heaps down here! Grrr.

You also need to change the oil filter :-)

are there no Supercheap Auto or Repco stores down there?
You could ring the Council & see if theres a free recycling drop off point for it

It should be a requirement for any store selling car oil take take back the old used oil . Just to stop people dumping it down drains etc
Wheres the Green party when you need them to make usefull laws .

I got mine done at Oil Changers down here last weekend. $165.00 for 6.5 litres of synthetic oil, new filter and other lubricants checked and topped up.

MIGHT be able to save a few bucks elsewhere, but I like the drive-in no-appointment-needed set up and the service is slick.

Been there twice with two different cars and no complaints.

    .
I know. Disposing of that isn't an issue.
They don't accept oil here, it's an Auckland thing.

Council lists 2 places - Hastings and the rubbish tip here, $13.
    As I said...........

They have this hazardous waste collection thing once a year, you take it to the collection point.

    However, it says:

Items that cannot be disposed of at the hazardous waste collection are: Commercial hazardous waste; electronic waste , explosives or munitions , medical waste ; farm chemicals and:

Car batteries: take them to your local scrap metal dealer
Gas cylinders: Gas Workz in Hastings
Paint: Mitre10Mega, Placemakers and Resene Colourshops (ring to check first)
Waste Oil: Small volumes can be taken to the Redclyffe Transfer Station

Well, what DO they take then?

As you know, I am an Aucklander (actually a Westie) so I can look at things from both sides so here are my thoughts.

Gosh you seem to put Hawke's Bay down a lot. Different down here to what it is in Auckland, I have to agree. A lot slower pace. New things take longer to happen here than in Auckland. And so on. After a while you will get used to it and stop going "sigh" when things don't go right the "Auckland" way.

Big thing to remember is "if New Zealand was going to get an enema, Auckland is where they would stick the tube up"

    That thought may comfort you.

I did not move by choice.

And it's because I have a strict budget. Its so damn expensive.
And I keep finding things like this.....more money for things that are free there.

I have a friend in havelock, he agrees with me, he started in Akld, then went Wgtn (because of work) now retired in Havelock.
But he has loads of money and as he says, doesn't affect him.

    It does with this household.

And after I got the attitude in SOuthland I have little patience for jafa comments or people slagging Akld, especially ones who have never been near it. ad it here, amazement that someone would not prefer any other place over Akld.

Yes it has horrible traffic, but I didn't have a problem with it.
Numerous beaches, heaps of bush, for walks and such, plenty of events, all over, activities for kids, great zoo, museums and such.
    And cheap shops.

Did I mention cheap everything? Don't believe me? look up your power costs for your location, then compare same company and plan but Akld. Its cheaper.

Here in Wellington, never heard of petrol stations accepting oil. Supercheap said to us they no longer take them. Wellington council landfill allows up to 10L of engine oil disposed for free. Porirua charges per liter I think or maybe a minimum car load fee but we don't have other stuff to dispose of. Porirua also unlike Wellington don't have any free disposal like glass or cardboard recycling or IT electrical free disposal.

For oil I just do it myself on a weekend. It is a once a year thing or once a 6 months thing. Grab the half price oil from Supercheap or Repco. $40-45 for 4L 5w30 Nulon full synthetic. Plus a filter but we grabbed a couple off Amazon so legit Toyota ones just before the govt made the Amazon GST tax mandatory.

Supercheap auto takes batteries. The benefit of Wellington landfill is that they weigh your car before and after so if you don't have much stuff you could get away with it, maybe a car battery and a metal chair frame for example. Porirua here don't weigh your car but instead does a guestimate with a car load fee or a car load fee + trailer fee etc etc. But if you have a lightly pakced car/trailer you would be paying the same as someone else who has a well packed car/trailer.
