Charging expats for quarantine

I hope that if you ever reach a low point (if you haven't already) in your life that someone is not so cruel to you either.

what reasons do people have for coming back?
those who where on holiday should all be back by now. those who have gotten stuck, i'm more than happy for govt to pay to get them home.
but a lot are coming back because their jobs are gone and no welfare. go home or be on the streets.
however most of those where out of work quite some time ago, so most of those should be back already.
so what does that leave us? people who want to come back but don't really need to. why should we be subsiding them when they can stick it out in their existing homes.
decision time was many months ago, time is running out. if they are not back soon they will be treated like everyone else.

remember no one has said they are stopping any kiwi from coming home, but like a lot of countries you need to go through their disease control and pay for it like they normally do. only difference here is the disease control is expensive.

low point in my life, been there done that. riding out covid in some other country is a piece of cake. (btw victim support is a joke and life is cruel. but i survived)

many will ride covid out here then go back to their life overseas. they have no life here, no intention to stay.

That expense is 100% people arriving from overseas. They obviously should be the ones paying for this. They are the ones bringing the risk of Covid .
Its not as if we are asking a lot. $3K is less than many student loans , its less than what many paid for their holiday .
And that money should be paid before they are allowed to leave again, as many will do in a year or so. The trip back to NZ will be temporary for many of them.

If the logic is people are just going to leave and stiff the government with the bill then it seems to be a small price to pay for ensuring that every case that comes through the border is caught.

Do you seriously think quarantine is comparable to a student loan or people going on holiday? The total estimated cost is less than a quarter of what the country pays out in foreign aid over three years.

I don't think that's the Kiwi way at all. It's surprising how many people seem to have such a low view of our country and fellow NZ'ers, expat or not.

No one is being FORCED to come back to NZ .
We arnt asking alot, $3k is pretty reasonable.

NZ doesnt have the money to spare .
NZ needs to start making some tough decisions .

Good plan. They can take the gun held to their heads making them return to NZ and sell it at one of Tinkerbell's buyback days to recoup some of the 3k.

You're wrong about not being forced to come back. A lot are. Here in the US I've seen multiple people with visa renewals denied due to CoVID and similar things are happening all over the place.

$3k isn't reasonable because being forced to stay in a hotel when there are cheaper options (we originally quarantined at motorhomes on army sites) available isn't reasonable.

And if we're talking about people returning who have little to nothing a $3k bill is grand way to welcome them back with a slap in the face.

I'm done going round and round in circles, will just leave it there.

yes. people just don't understand the situation and are only now realizing its a long term thing. hence why they want to flee to a safe haven like nz.
