CliveM, thanks and will try that tomorrow.

Thinking about it, can you describe the noise?

I am sure you would know what water hammering is, its when pipes vibrate violently that they normally bang against what they are fixed to. This is usually caused by when a valve shuts off suddenly sending a shockwave down the line. This would probably indicate that your fill valve is not gradually closing and is more likely shutting off abruptly, it probably needs replacing.

I still find it odd that air would get trapped in a cold water line, due to the pressure it should be at. Normally if you turn a tap on and it is spraying like a water jet but also spitting, then air does seem trapped but it is still being pushed out. If the pressure is low, maybe the air can not be pushed out, so to fix, just switch the main supply off, open the lowest tap and drain, you can open all the other taps to do it quicker. Once all drained close all the taps, except the highest tap and turn the main on. This should fill the pipes and push the air out.

I am trying to think what other sounds you could encounter.

Whistling is when something clogs the line leaving only a small enough opening.

Gurgling, is normally a blockage that may need cleaning. Hair, fat, lime scale.

The key to this issue is the noise you hear though.
